Social Media Content Creation: My Favorite Beginner Strategies for Generating Traffic

Starting a social media campaign from scratch can be a little overwhelming, especially when the company doesn’t have an online presence at all. I’ve been there. You create a page, but where do you go from there? Follow along for a few tips geared toward the DIYer and the beginner content creator. Read to the end for a bonus strategy with big results!

RESEARCH. RESEARCH. RESEARCH.

Simplest way? Just Google “social media trends 2022” and read a few articles. You’re going to come up with two different types of results: media trends and design trends.

Check out these (abridged) lists of trends from the following articles by Influencer Marketing Hub:

Media Trends

  • TikTok Will Become Huge
  • Video Content Will Continue to Dominate
  • Increase in the Use of Social Media for Customer Service
  • Instagram and Twitter Will Remain Popular

Design Trends

  • Inclusive imagery
  • 90s wistfulness
  • Grunge revival
  • Flat icons and illustrations
  • 3D illustrations
  • Expressive lettering
  • Geometric patterns
  • Serif fonts
  • Social media screen captures
  • Minimalism

The first list is where and how to post (media trends). The second list focuses on what to post (design trends). Combine them to make a plan for your campaign.

CREATE A CONTENT STRATEGY

Based on the above information, I would build my content strategy around TikTok and Instagram using mostly video posts and incorporate a lot of different 90s style design elements.

CASE STUDY

Here’s a case study on a campaign I ran for an annual festival event for a Greek church.

2018

GIFs and Memes were a big deal this year.

The memes didn’t perform as well as the GIFs, which isn’t surprising looking back since video content is still on the list of trends for this year. I went lighter on memes the next year.

2019

Memes, food and infographics were on the list of trends for this year.

I discovered that food posts yielded the best results, so I incorporated more of that into the following year’s campaign.

2020

GIFs continue to be popular as well as food posts.

Went even heavier on video content the following year.

2021

Video and food continue to be popular. Also, behind the scenes content.

What do you think? Anyone using any other tactics they want to share?
